Language- A few curse words, nothing too horrible. One of the characters is known for dipping his war hood in the blood of his conquests. There are several instances of non humans humiliating humans and overall cruel behavior to humans. It has scenes of graphic bloody war like battles and attacks on characters who are related and are heartless in their cruelty. One side character is in a homosexual relationship with a mortal. There are suggestions of other sexual conduct going on, but nothing overly graphic nor explicit. Sensuality, there is a kiss near the end and the the character has an internal narrative going on while the kiss is happening. The main character is a good model for perserverence, even though she is flawed in some of her thinking. No sitting still in this story, they get you right from the start in chapter one and you want to continue. The story is unique and moves along at a nice pace. Overall, I am in love with this series and I cannot wait to for the final book to come out later this year. Yet, I think older teens would have the maturity to see this red flag and address the issue correctly.

When bullying causes almost death, I see a serious red flag. The bullying almost crosses a line when this group of faeries try to drown Jude in a river and later on, they almost kill her by forcing her to eat a fruit that can be fatal to humans like herself. The main character, Jude, is bullied by a group of faeries at school, which includes Prince Cardan (who is another main character in this series). The one thing that bothered me just a bit was the bullying. Violence is typical in fantasy novels a few stabbings are the main violence in this book. The violence is a lot, but I wouldn't describe it as "graphic" or "frightening", especially for older teens. This book has some great romance, no sex, just some passionate kisses. Even the main protagonist, Jude, is not necessarily "good". The faeries in this book are manipulative, greedy, deceiving, and some are straight up murderers. This book is full of faeries, but these are not your typical sing-song happy-go-lucky faeries with pixie wings and a little magic. It was very clean, which is actually quite hard to find in a Young Adult fantasy book these days. I am a huge fan of darker fantasy and so this book blessed my life with its gothic vibes. This series is one of my most favorite book series of all time.
